UFC 102 Predictions and Results

ufc102poster

A few hours from now, 2 of the greatest heavyweights of all time will square off to find out who still has it or who needs to hang it up. This might not have that type of stipulation but it certainly seems like it. But before we talk about the main event, let’s talk about some of the fights that I find intriguing. Without further ado, here they are:

Mark Muñoz vs. Nick Catone (Middleweights)

The sole reason why I writing about this fight is because Mark is a fellow Filipino and I got to give some love to a brother.  I’m not implying that this fight is not interesting; it’s just that I don’t see how Catone can even keep this competitive and entertaining. Catone is primarily a wrestler and with Muñoz being a former NCAA Wrestling Champ in 2001 totally cancels out his only chance of an upset. By the way, have you seen Mark lately? He looks totally different from the guy that got knocked out by Matt Hamill at UFC 96. His move down in weight made him look like a monster. I never thought he can be that ripped, and I guess that’s exactly what he’ll do to Catone.

Prediction:  Muñoz wins by shutout 3 rounds to none in a decision

Result: Munoz wins by split decision 29-28

Aaron Simpson vs. Ed Hermann (Middleweights)

Has the making of an exciting fight as both these guys fight in only one direction and that is forward.  Hermann has been a good gatekeeper for the UFC and if Aaron Simpson wins, then he’s ready to be in the mix of contenders in the middleweight division.

Prediction: Simpson by KO Round 1

Result: Simpson by TKO rd.2 due to an injury

Brandon Vera vs. Krzysztof Soszynsky (Light Heavyweights)

I’ll make this short and sweet. Soszynsky’s 6 fight win streak is going to come to an end. Brandon will chop those legs down and I even see a head kick ending this thing. Vera has tremendous speed advantage and he should capitalize on it.

Prediction: Vera by KO round 2

Result: Vera by Unanimous decision 30-27

Nate Marquardt vs. Demian Maia (Middleweights)

As much as it pains me, I have to choose a winner in this one. Both of these guys are my favorites so it will be tough. Nate is a better stand-up guy and has a good ground game but he’ll be stupid if he takes this to the ground. 8 of Maia’s 10 wins were by submission and as good as Nate is on the ground, Demian is at least a couple of notches better. If Demian can withstand Nate’s early onslaught, he’ll win this one.

Prediction: Nate Marquardt by KO round 2 (this one might bite me in the ass but, whatever)

Result: Nate wins by KO round 1

Randy Couture vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (Heavyweights)

If we’ll talk about both fighters’ credentials, it will take all day. So here’s the quick synopsis, Couture is the best heavyweight the UFC has ever seen and Nogueira is the best PRIDE heavyweight of all time not named Fedor, so there. In pro wrestling analogy, this would be like the first time Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair wrestled each other. I don’t remember what happened then but tonight I feel Randy has a little bit more in the tank than Nogueira. “Minotauro” looked terrible against Mir and while he was partly injured at the time he didn’t really look great against Sylvia prior to the later stages of that match. Still, regardless of the outcome, both their legacies are already firmly in place.

Prediction: Randy Couture by KO midway through the 3rd round

Result: Nog wins by UD

Krzysztof Soszynski

Another UFC event is looming on the horizon and I’m here once again to give some exposure to the less heralded fights on the card (UFC 102). First on my list is the fight between TUF 8 Alum Krzysztof Soszynski and our very own Fil-am Muay Thay specialist Brandon Vera.

Both guys need this win to gain some ground on one of the deepest divisions in the UFC (Light Heavyweight). Vera (10-3) is coming off of a devastating win over Mike Patt in UFC 96. And if its any indication of things to come, it’s going to be a long night (or a short one) for Soszynski (18-8) come fight night. If Vera comes in sharp, there is no way Soszynski can deal with him.

There is one side story in the just concluded UFC 101 showdown between Anderson Silva and Forrest Griffin that was getting a lot of ink prior to the match up and i just want to show everyone who and what it was about.

About a year ago, a well decorated Jiu-jitsu grappler by the name of Robert Drysdale (picture above) came into Anderson Silva’s camp and asked the latter if he could train with the former. For some reason Drysdale wasn’t welcomed by Silva’s camp and fast forward to a few months ago, Drysdale was in Griffin’s training camp talking smack about how Forrest will knock Silva out easily. Well, we all know how that worked for Griffin. Is this the end of the Drysdale and Silva saga? Only time will tell.

Mike Cook

Another dissapointing fight for Cook

After getting humiliated by former WWE wrestler Bobby Lashley in a recent MFC event, Mike cook was looking for redemption and instead got stopped again in the very first round by Scott Lighty in the prelims of Stikeforce Carano vs. Santos in San Jose last Saturday. His record now drops to 7-5.

Strikeforce Preview

Outside the Main Event match between the face of woman’s MMA Gina Carano and Cyborg Santos, the rest of the card hasn’t really received much attention which i think is a travesty because this is a pretty decent card with a lot of intriguing match-ups. One of which could possibly be in the running for a shot at Fedor down the line. That match-up is between former UFC fighter Fabricio Werdum and the ever dangerous Mike Kyle.

Werdum and Kyle.. ripped and ready
Werdum and Kyle.. ripped and ready

Werdum should finish Kyle as fast as he can. He might have the advantage in almost any category but Kyle has power in both hands and if Werdum isn’t careful it will be Junior Dos Santos all over again for him.

Prediction: Werdum by submission in round 2

Then there’s the Light Heavyweight title fight between current champion Babalu Sobral and one of the future pillars of the sport Gegard Mousasi. Babalu might be the champ but this could be end quickly as well with Gegard winning by submission in the 3rd round.

Babalu will have his hands full against Mousasi

This is going to be a great night of fighting so sit back and enjoy the show. And since this is mmatattoos.com here’s a photo of Isaiah Hill to close the show.

Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos

Just a week after UFC 101, MMA fans are in for another treat as Strikeforce will have their second card (after acquiring Pro Elite). The main event will pit the face of women’s MMA Gina Carano against perhaps the most dominating female fighter in the world today Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos.

Carano, the undefeated former Muay Thai fighter is widely regarded as Strikeforce’s meal ticket in promoting women’s MMA and matching her up with Cyborg is extremely risky. At the same time, this is the only fight that makes sense for both (and Strikeforce as well) fighters and after all is said and done. I hope Gina stays as beautiful as she is because Cyborg will not be thinking twice of  punching a hole through that gorgeous face.

Prediction: Cyborg by brutal knock out in the very first round.

UFC 101 Recap

ufc-101-featured-2

Johnny Hendricks vs. Amir Sadollah:

Former WEC fighter Hendricks made short work of former TUF winner Amir Sadollah as the fight lasted for only 29 seconds. I didn’t even see the thing happen live as I was trying to grab some potato chips. When I looked up, Amir was reeling from a left hook (thank you instant replay) that he run into. A case can be argued that it was a controversial stoppage but I don’t see him recovering from that shot anyways.

Winner: Hendricks by KO 29 sec. into the 1st round.

Anderson Silva vs. Forrest Griffin:

I had no doubt in my mind that Forrest would get knocked out since he was never really too hard to find and Anderson was without question the most precise striker in MMA perhaps ever. What surprised me was the way he did it. The fight started looking like it will be another boring match; until Anderson figured Forrest’s timing out and the rest as they say was history. Forrest got knocked down twice and it was just a matter of time as they say when Anderson knocked him out with a jab while moving backwards. Awesome!

Winner: Anderson Silva by knockout in the 1st round.

BJ Penn vs. Kenny Florian:

Although BJ was an overwhelming favorite by almost everyone, I found it hard to dismiss Kenny so easily because he’s one of those fighters who are very smart and I thought he had what it takes to break BJ Penn. Well, it all changed the very moment they tangled up as BJ was just too strong (not to mention too skilled as well) for Kenny. Florian tried to tire BJ out by pinning him to the fence but to no avail. For the first time I guess ever, BJ wasn’t lying when he said he was in the best shape of his life as he eventually got Florian down and made him tap via a rear naked choke.

Winner: And still UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn via RNC 3:54 in round 4.
